What Are the Hazards of Silicon Tetrachloride

Posted Date:2020/12/23

What is silicon tetrachloride?

High-purity silicon tetrachloride is a colorless and transparent liquid, slightly yellow or light yellow with a lower purity, with a suffocating odor. Under normal temperature and pressure, the density is 1.48, the melting point is -70°C, and the boiling point is 57.6°C. The boiling point increases with increasing pressure. It is hydrolyzed in moist air into silicic acid and hydrogen chloride. The hydrolysis is very intense when exposed to water, and it can also react violently with alcohols. It will soluble in carbon tetrachloride, titanium tetrachloride and tin tetrachloride. And it is corrosive to the skin. It is used to make silicate esters, organic silicon monomers, organic silicon oil, high-temperature insulating paint, silicone resin, silicone rubber, etc., and also used as a smoke screen agent. Most of the industrial preparation is obtained by the high temperature synthesis reaction of silicon powder and hydrogen chloride.

Role and use

It is widely used in the manufacture of organosilicon compounds, such as silicate, silicone oil, high temperature insulating paint, silicone resin, silicone rubber and heat-resistant cushioning materials. High-purity silicon tetrachloride is a material for manufacturing polysilicon, high-purity silicon dioxide, inorganic silicon compounds, and quartz fibers. It is used in the military industry to make smoke screen agents. The metallurgical industry is used to manufacture corrosion-resistant ferrosilicon.

It is also used as a mold release agent in the foundry industry. It is an essential chemical raw material in large-scale industrial production.

The harm of silicon tetrachloride

Health hazards: It has a strong stimulating effect on the eyes and upper respiratory tract. High concentrations can cause corneal opacity and inflammation of the respiratory tract. If it is directly contact with eyes, it can cause cornea and eyelid burns. If it is contact with skin, it can cause tissue necrosis.

Fire and explosion hazard: This product is non-flammable, highly corrosive, irritating, and can cause burns to the human body.
